Shattering Rain

Monday, December 15, 2008

The rain was beating harder than ever against the window pane.
Jack stood about an inch away from the window, peeping outside, squinting his eyes as if it would help clear his vision of the blurry image outside.

He's late.
He's usually not late, Jack thought to himself.

Just as Jack turned away from the window to get another sip of his coffee, he heard the engine of a car stop outside his house.

He's here.

Jack quickly took another sip of the coffee and put on his coat.
As he opened the door, the whirling of the wind surprised him.
He felt the cold rain spat against his face.
He hastenly locked the door behind him, upturned his collar and quickly dashed for the car.

"Phewwww... The rain's pouring really hard outside..."

Jack spoke while brushing off his already soaked hair.

"She's gone, Jack".

Jack sensed something was wrong.
He turned towards Kevin and realized tears was flowing down his cheek.

In that moment, the beating of the rain became silent.
The cold air turned warm.
Everything stood still.

"What happened?"

Kevin relate the story.
Jack listened.

Jack knew the feeling. That all too familiar feeling.
All he could do was to listen.
He knew it was something Kevin will need to go through.

"Why... why...?"

Kevin asked in bitterness.

Jack looked at him with no answer to offer.
All he could do was to listen.

The car remained silent.
Gloom pervaded the air, beclouding the world outside into a formless image.

Jack knew the feeling.
That all too familiar feeling.

Shattering rain, won't you go away?
